Heartburn: When acid ends up in the wrong place

Acid is desirable in the stomach. In the esophagus, however, the same stomach contents can cause an unpleasant burning sensation. Therefore, understanding the issue requires looking not just at the amount of acid, but primarily at its location.

What reflux means

Normally, the valve at the junction between the esophagus and the stomach prevents stomach contents from flowing back up. If it lets contents pass upwards, this is called reflux. This can irritate the lining of the esophagus.

The typical burning sensation behind the breastbone is therefore not evidence that the entire body is "too acidic." This is a localized process.

Why the timing can be noticeable

Some people notice symptoms especially after large meals, when bending over, or when lying down. Certain foods or drinks can also be noticeable triggers. The role they play varies from person to person.

A brief log of meals, drinks, and the timing of symptoms can help prepare for a conversation with your doctor. It does not replace a medical examination.

Neutralizing acid is not the same as preventing reflux

During neutralization, acid and base react with each other. This is initially a chemical process. Whether a remedy effectively and safely treats symptoms also depends on its composition, dosage, and application.

Furthermore, a change in stomach contents does not automatically mean that the valve to the esophagus works better. Therefore, neutralization, reflux, and the regulation of blood pH should not be presented as the same mechanism.

When medical consultation is important

Frequent or severe heartburn and difficulty swallowing should be clarified by a doctor. New, severe chest pain, especially when accompanied by shortness of breath or circulatory problems, is an emergency and should not be self-diagnosed as heartburn.

This article explains contexts and does not replace individual medical advice. Mineral supply and the treatment of reflux symptoms are different topics.
